THE USE OF AUTHENTIC EFL READING MATERIALS
IN TEACHING READING
(An experimental study at a Senior High School
in Sarolangun Regency Jambi Province)

This study attempts to investigate the use of authentic EFL reading materials in teaching reading at a Senior High School in Sarolangun Regency Jambi Province. This study was designed to find out: 1) the effect of the use of authentic reading materials in teaching reading; 2) teachers’ and students’ attitudes to the use of authentic reading materials in teaching reading.This study employed mixed method design used incorporated both qualitative and quantitative instruments to accomplish the objectives of the study. It used tests (pre-test and post-test) to the experimental and control group, and employed two questionnaires (teachers’ questionnaire and students’ questionnaire) to look at their attitude to the use of authentic reading materials in teaching reading, as well as interviews with both teachers and students from a randomly selected representative sample of the participants to support the data gained from the questionnaires. The samples of the study are some English teachers and two classes of grade ten which consists of 32 students in each class. The results of the study showed that there was significance difference between the post-test mean scores of Experimental group and post-test mean scores of Control group in reading comprehension test using authentic reading materials. It means that teaching reading by using authentic reading materials improved students’ reading comprehension better than using non-authentic reading materials. The teachers and students participants had positive attitudes to the use of authentic reading materials in teaching reading. They indicated that an ideal reading class should combine of both authentic and non-authentic reading materials. Besides, the teacher revealed that the most preferable authentic materials were short stories and recipes, whereas poems and novels were the least preferable one. While, the students stated that the most preferable authentic materials were short stories and internet materials, whereas poems were the least preferable one. It can be seen that, between the teachers and students had the same attitude to the use of authentic reading materials in teaching reading. In line with findings above, this study is expected to be useful and offer some contributions to the development of English teaching especially in teaching reading. This study may also inspire the other researchers to conduct further research dealing with the use of authentic EFL reading materials in teaching reading.
