INDIRECT SPEECH IN THE ADVERTISEMENT: A MILK PRODUCT IN INDONESIA

Abstrak
This research studies the indirect speech acts used in the advertisement of a company’s product, milk. It is assumed that companies always use indirectness to promote their product; the use of indirectness itself is intended to avoid high risk perlocutionary force. What meant by high risk perlocutionary force in this regard is the unintended effect caused by the speech acts used in the promotion of the product. It is found that the company uses indirectness to persuade and to direct the consumer and the implied meaning found is that the company believes that they are superior on other milk companies.
