Listening is the most fundamental ability amongst the four language skills. Although listening is a receptive skill and associated with speaking, listening has various purposes and its own importance. The primary aims of listening are to enable students to respond appropriately in social interactions, to nurture confidence and self-esteem to communicate, to convey emotions and opinions without hesitation in pronunciation and intonation, and to allow students to become good listeners who can understand, interpret, and appreciate what is being listened to, as well as respecting the speaker. However, schools are grappling a crisis in the learning and teaching of this skill. Listening as a skill has been neglected and ostracized in favour of other skills, i.e. speaking and writing. In conclusion, students are struggling – from a once-irrelevant issue that is not knowing how to pronounce certain words, to not understanding a lesson due to inability to listen well in class or lectures that are hours long. Hence, steps must be taken to enhance the teaching and learning of listening skill because a good student, in essence, is a good listener. All of it begins with an extraordinary teacher who places the emphasis on all language skills in a well-organized and brilliant manner.
