Abstrak
Multiculturalism is a view that gives an appreciation of cultural diversity in a society. The existence of the Chinese ethnic in Indonesia is a fact which is finally delivering on the need for the attitude of openness to accept them as a part of integrated societies. This is shown by the act of people of Nusantara before the colonial authorities are applied which is able to build a harmonious relationship with the newcomers from China. The colonial policy imposes a system of separation between ethnic groups which causes disharmony relationship between those different ethnic groups. The regulations of wijkenstelsel and passenstelsel become powerful reasons to separate the Chinese ethnic with the other ethnics. For the colonial authorities, this can be understood as a political will to strengthen their power in the middle of a separate society.
