Communication is the process by which message are transferred from a source (encorder) to a receiver (decoder). The notion of communication would include all those processes by which people influence one another. But one or two members of the group may have high standing and carry high prestige because of their status or leadership roles, and the individual may adopt (accept and put into effect) their position. The group as an entity may perform certain tasks that serve it or persons or units other than the group and its members. Some of these tasks relate to the maintenance of the group itself.
Groups provide a basis for decision making, relating to others, achieving status, self expression, multiplying one’s effect, and relaxing. Members tend to be more committed to the decision arrived at and more likely to follow group recommendations when they have interacted in the decision. At times, groups postpone in the decision-making, the wrongdecision, provide frustrasion, and an escape from responsibility.
Some groups exist wholly in terms of the service rendered to individual group members; they almost solely as a means of eccomplishing the goals of individual members. Typically, these goals must be at least complementary, although they need not be identical. Other groups exist to fulfill a function as an entire group.
The small group setting is one of the most important for communication, in terms of both is rate of occurrence and its impact upon us collectively and individually. Participation in small groups serves many personal goals including, psychological, social, and therapeutic-expressive needs, desire for growth in information, areas of interest, and skills as well as multiplying impact on society.
Group interaction changes attitudes (a mental position regarding a state) and beliefs (confidence, faith, or trust). Participation in the group may couse it to serve as a “reference group” for an individual, helping him determine what are acceptable beliefs and behaviours.
Four communication axioms which seem to be operating include: (1) we cannot not communication; (2) communication involves both contect and relationship aspects; (3) communication may be either confirming or disconfirming; and (4) communication can extend from therapeutic to pathological.
